When I drive to my office, I’ve been flabbergasted at how many downtown office buildings and complexes have no cars in the parking lot.

No people walking on the sidewalks.

Practically every building has a “For Lease” sign.  

Where is everyone?!

The pandemic didn’t just confine people to their homes. It completely edited how people think about work.

People stepped off the treadmill, took a step back, and realized they wanted something different.

“I want more control over my lifestyle.” is the single most common thing I hear from clients.

For many, “more control” meant stepping away from the 9-5 role they’d been working.

Nearly 40% of Americans performed freelance work in 2022.

That’s up nearly 10% from 2021, and a third of them make freelance their full-time work. 

Why?

• Some pivoted to freelancing as a way to stay home with kids, reduce commute time, or take care of aging parents.
• Some retired early and got bored, or needed a few extra paychecks to combat inflation.
• Some wanted more control of their lifestyle, so they decided to become their own bosses.

What do all of these folks have in common?  

They are 100% responsible for their own healthcare.  

As employees, they may have had an HR department that helped them understand their health plan choices and been a resource for questions.

Not anymore.
