A Case Study

John, a 62 year old male, is a multi decade successful professional.

He is well-established in his field.

He has traveled all over the world

He’s recognized as an outstanding leader.

His problem? His employer and he no longer share the same values. Yet, he feels he can’t leave because of the cost of health insurance.

He’s being asked to join other teams as a consultant, but that would mean he loses the health insurance he has as an employee.

He has a significant pre-existing condition that prevents him from being approved with a private health plan that has a national PPO plan with a preferred rate. This presents a few challenges for both him and his wife.

Therefore, these are his 2 current options:

He can go on Cobra and use the same plan he’s had for the past 7 years.

  • Problem:
    • The cost is significantly higher on Cobra.  The employer no longer subsidizes his monthly health insurance rate.
    • Cobra only lasts for 18 months. It won’t cover him long enough to get into Medicare at age 65.

He can go on an Obamacare plan in the marketplace.

  • Problem:
    • Cost again – for him and his wife in their 60’s, the ACA rates come in over $1,900 per month – crazy, right?.
    • The ACA HMO networks are not national coverage, only state- and regional-based.  He isn’t covered with his previous doctor, who is located out-of-state.
    • We considered the option of him and wife relocating to that state. But it didn’t make sense for him to move his residence (and life!) to save $500 a month on an ACA plan!

As his trusted health insurance advisor – what did I recommend for him?

  • Don’t directly request assistance for health insurance on an internet site. His phone blew up with so many calls – he became more overwhelmed and didn’t trust what he was being presented with.
  • Approach the organizations who are seeking him out for consulting work to negotiate for access to or a contribution of his health plan – above and beyond his contracted rate.
  • His health plan solution: Enroll his wife on the preferred rate health plan, while he pays the high cost of the Obamacare plan. This will save them money on their monthly premiums and give him the benefit of overlapping coverages from a private plan.

The invaluable service I provided to John was life-changing for him.  He thought that he might need to “suck it up” for the next three years and tolerate the lack of integrity.

Now, he has great coverage, fantastic work, and isn’t sacrificing his morals.

Every day, I help people all over the United States understand their health insurance options. And everyone’s situation is unique – not one person’s needs are identical.

But no matter the situation, there are always 2 big concerns:

  1. Overwhelm – just not knowing where to start.
  2. Trust – making sure all details are revealed.

I so enjoy giving clarity and making the health insurance process simple!  It’s exciting for me to see someone understand their options and make good, solid decisions knowing all that is available to them.

As a matter of fact, I had the thought last week – ‘maybe I should charge a consultation fee!’ With my expertise in health insurance, I seriously impact the quality of people’s lives.
