Why insurance claims feel confusing (and 3 simple ways to make them easier)

April 23, 2026

Who has ever tried to catch something like a lunar eclipse…only to miss it?

I was ready. My alarm was set for 2 am, and its dutiful chirp brought me out of a deep sleep.

I shuffled to the window, hoping to be awestruck…

…but when I peered outside, it was dark. The nighttime sky was overcast and cloudy, blocking all the lunar glory. 😦

Meanwhile, my sister in Illinois had a spectacular view. What a way to start your day, right?!

Sometimes the problem is clarity

This whole thing got me thinking…

Sometimes we miss what we’re hoping to see (like a lunar eclipse…or insurance reimbursements) because there just isn’t clarity.

In the midst of a major health event or change, the last thing anyone wants is to get cross-eyed trying to sort through insurance claims.

Especially when:

  • a medical coding error
  • a missed deadline
  • or an incomplete form

can lead to delays or incomplete coverage.

But you don’t have to go it alone, and it doesn’t have to be a tangled mess.

Clients often share how helpful it is to have support and simple systems in place to better understand their claims and manage the paperwork.

So, I thought I’d pass along 3 of those tips.

1. Organize your documents

Use file folders or a binder for your paperwork and:

  • sort by date
  • sort by health issue
  • organize by provider or service
  • keep policy numbers handy for reference

Label everything clearly so it’s easy to find when you need it.

2. Track deadlines

Use one consistent tool or notebook.

I personally prefer a spreadsheet to track everything.

  • note the date, time, and who you spoke to for every call
  • log important dates of service
  • set reminders to follow up on claim statuses

3. Educate yourself on your plan

Get familiar with your plan, the claims process, and what your policy actually covers.

Understanding your EOB (explanation of benefits) can make a big difference.

These typically include:

  • claim details: services provided, dates, and provider information
  • payment information: what was billed, what insurance covered, discounts, and what you owe
  • reason codes: explanations for denials or adjustments
  • appeal instructions: how to respond if a claim is denied

You don’t have to figure it out alone

If you need help or have questions, it can make a big difference to talk things through with someone who understands the process.

A small reminder to look up once in a while

If your brain needs a break from paperwork, there’s always something happening in the sky worth looking up for.

Meteor showers, constellations, planets…they’re all still there, even when we can’t see them clearly.

And sometimes, that’s a good reminder:
Clarity makes all the difference.
